This is the 1st attempt at an interactive map that shows direction from the train station to the the 2 building that will be featured in my videoes. I have created these using Adobe after effects using the tutorials i found earlier that are featured in my blog. This was a rough try and will make the composition widescreen for use in the final video.

It looks simple to make but I feel this will give my videoes something extra and will be a good tool that people will find usefull.

Eventually we went to Owen and set a date were he could show us the processes needed to use the sound booth. The Galleries of Justice Museum is a unique and historic building which provides the history of Crime and Punishment through access to its past and collections.

The Galleries of Justice are housed in the Shire Hall building, which stands in the Lace Market area of Nottingham.

Shire Hall and the surrounding buildings in which the Galleries of Justice is housed, were in use from the 1700' up to the mid 1980's.

In 1995 Shire Hall became a listed building and was converted into the National Museum of Law and the Galleries of Justice.

The venue is inspiring and breath-taking that holds two Victorian court rooms, a Police Station used until 1986, prison cells, exercise yard, the HM Prison Service Collection, temporary exhibitions and the brand new Convict Ship.

Nottingham's Old Shire Hall is one and rests upon the brow of the cliff descending down into and against the sandstone creating an unusual stronghold of courts, suites and the old County Gaol.

The Galleries of Justice Museum has something for everyone witha range of specially designed educational programmes as well as with non-mainstream groups and individual learners.

Broadway cinema is located in the historic lace market are of Nottingham and has been a stable pillar of the lace markets skyline.

The building has seen many incarnations first as Wesleyan Chapel. The chapel was originally open on the 2nd of December 1797. A larger chapel was erected in 1847 and stood firm till 1930 where the final service was held .

During the inter-war years the chapel's Sunday School and Boys’ Brigade company flourished. But by 1954 also faced the same fate. The building faced demolition in 1966.

Throughout its rice history the building saw many people walk through its doors non more than William Booth . Commemorated with a plaque in the foyer was the former apprentice pawnbroker.

Booth (a preacher) devoted his life to helping the poor. And in 1878, founding the Salvation Army.

By 1957 the newly formed Film Society took over the site and began running monthly screenings of international and archive films in the auditorium of the Co-operative Educational Centre. (1959).

On 22 September 1966 the Nottingham Film Theatre opened its doors to the public.
Broadway Cinema was born out this with support from the BFI, East Midlands Arts, Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.

The building became the Broadway Cinema on 31 August 1989.

PRP - ARTEFACT 4

I have found some information on how to create a 3d video using two cameras.

Things i will need:

Two Cameras (preferably the same model)
3D Glasses
A Video Editor
a lot of patience

Steps

Get your two cameras, and make sure the lenses are 2-8 inches apart. (three works best, but the greater the more 3D effect). Using the camera mount that the university has.

Film whatever you want in 3D with both cameras.

Upload both videos into your video editor.

Make the left video have a red overlay. Make the right camera's video have a blue overlay. The result should be the same video, twice, in two colors, three inches apart.

Place both videos into your editor, on top of each other, so you can see them both at once. The result should be almost purple and you should have a somewhat "double-vision" look to it.

Export this video, and play it, while wearing those Red-Blue 3D glasses and it should work. If not, you should try experimenting with the settings.

If need be, switch the colors to darker or lighter shades. Maybe even try changing the distance of the lenses.

Make sure you can "Place both videos on top of each other" with whatever "simple" editing software you have.

I will be setting up a filming date with the Galleries of justice. To do this first will be carrying out a risk assessment. I will be doing this today which is the 11 of march. I will also draw up a detailed list of exactly what I want to record, what photos i will take and to let them know about this in advance.

I then show this to helen sheperd who is the contact. I will also show this to my tutor and the client to insure no problems occur becuase i am aware of the importance to galleries that I do not interrupt the experience for the visitor/tours during the recording process.

I will post this information onto my blog to show my eveidence and will email this information to the contact.

Artefact 4 - 3d video

Instead of using the tutrial to create a 3d image video . I will actually film using cameras to create a 3d effect. I will update my blog to show the processes of how to do this. First i will need to contact owen about the eqipment that will i will need to produce this.

I have chosen to do it in this way after consulting my tutor as well in conjuction with fellow students.

I have been aware that other students will be doing a similar project and inconjuction with them. We will set up a tutorial for us to learn and attept the processes needed to create a 3d video.

I will take pictures of the process we will use to show evidence. Which was one suggestion that came from my tutor.

Artefact 3 – Evaluation

The overall design of this artefact I felt was useful and is focused on what I intend to achieve because this artefact is influenced by 3d sound and this is what my question is based on. The previous artefacts have helped shape this artefact having gained insight into what my audience want’s and I fell this artefact caters towards that.

I felt that the video of this this artefact is in standard definition and would ultimately be aiming to implement a full 3d package with 3d sound and video which would have made the artefact more complete. I feel this would be a change I would implement in future experiments. The production of the binaural sound came out the way I intended but hope for a higher production quality that would make it more rounded experience for the target audience.

I was happy with the material I chose to conduct this experiment because not having the full 3d technology using a binaural sound technique allowed me to showcase the potential of a full 3d video package based around sports broadcasting and would look to do this following this successful experiment.

In future experiment I feel adjustments can be made to the quality of the video and will look to do this by creating a 3D image video incorporating the strengths of this experiment with the 3d video

I felt this experiment pushes the audience perception on how sports broadcasting will be moving towards in the present and near future. Because it showcases new technologies that can change the way people watch sports broadcasts.

I felt the solution I used for 3d sound was adequate as it is a way to produce 3d sound. Using binaural techniques is limited I feel and would look to progress this to a more professional 3d sound in future experiment. The limitation of this technique is the audience has to wear headphones to get a 3d effect and would look to progress to using a 5.1 surround sound systems to showcase what 3d sound has to offer fully.

In my opinion the response I used for this experiment was right as it allowed me to move into 3d sound by learning different techniques to produce it. It gives foundation to my understanding of how 3d sound is produced and would look to further this knowledge by experimenting with alternative sound application.

I felt overall the experiment was a susses and from this build on the experiment to give a professional look, feel and sound to a highlighted package with these elements which is the ultimate goal.

Task for Client project

Produce 5 video's on the historic Lace Market area of Nottingham.

The purpose for our the video’s is to not only to help people locate the historical places around the area, but also to inform them of the profound history that these places carry, which leads as far back as the 1700’s.

Also to find and include seprately the following;
1. Links to the photographs of the building/area/artefacts
2. Links to websites (containing further information)
3. Links to other video’s relevant to the place
4. Archive video
5. Drawings and paintings of the area/buildings

The target audience are tourists visiting the city and it will be based specifically in the Lace Market area of Nottingham city centre. The content is for an application that will have small videos about the buildings and their history. The content that will consist of this will be film clips, archive photographs, and further information about each place.
The video’s will be voiceover driven tour of the different places located on tour. This will include archive material.

The video’s will be for, four buildings in the Lace Market. These are The Broadway, St. Mary’s Church, the Galleries of Justice and the Adams Building

There will be an initial video of up to 4-minutes that will briefly sum up history of the Lace Market area. However, their will be specific videoes on specific building to discover , there will be a 2-minute clip for each of these historical places telling you what they are and what it used to be in the past. This will also give you an option to browse through images of the past from that place with other archive material to support it. All clips will be shot in a DV format.

The people involved in the designing of the project are Umar Hussain and Abdul Seedat. Both having strong backgrounds in the area of multimedia, they also specialise in making short films and producing documentaries. They also have extensive knowledge in editing and using various editing software’s. Both Abdul Seedat and Umar Hussain have worked on many projects together, ranging from producing a documentary for YMCA England to working with local organisations such as the Notts County Football team in supporting them with a short film. Most recently, they were both responsible for filming and editing a short film produced for final year graduate Fashion Marketing and Communications students, which was showcased at their exhibition.

We will be responsible for just the video’s and some of the archive pictures that we will include may be copyright protected, so they may incur a small fee to the Local Studies Library of Nottingham, The Evening Post and from websites

Artefact 2 – Evaluation

I posted a discussion on a dedicated sports forum. I felt the overall design was rushed and lacked focus. This is because of 3 discussions areas I posted. Posting three subject areas made people chose 1 or the other and gave me limited responses. People felt they could choose which subject area to answer and didn’t fully complete the discussions fully. I felt the subject areas were linked but having three seem like I didn’t know what I wanted to find out. Furthermore it did not allow me to gain concise and relevant answers to those subject areas. People who responded gave a general overview to the areas and summarised them into one. Which was not the intention.

If I were to the experiment again or change anything I would post one discussion that was focused and had a clear direction to what I was asking from the audience.

I was happy with the forum I chose to post on because it was a dedicated sports forum were people knew about different sports rules and different types of sports, which made the audience cleaver enough to understand what I was talking about. This made me not have to explain background information as they knew that already like the rule of offside which features in both videos. I feel that posting the discussion on both Soccer and American football subject area gave me an audience response that were broad and gave me a good sample from both areas of interest.

I felt the artefact played it safe as the previous artefact had already given me a target audience which I pursued in this artefact. This was a good point about the experiment. Targeting the audience I wanted was the difference that made this artefact work for me. I feel that the artefact was done in a comfort zone of what I know and what I wanted to find out. I fell that in future artefacts I have to think outside the box and show this audience who are knowledgeable enough something new that makes them think .

The view of the audience on the artefact were vague and generalised and showed a lack of background knowledge on my part about posting discussions online. In the future have a concise and directed discussion. Not to have vague subject areas .

I felt overall the artefact worked because though people didn’t answer each discussion there was a large enough amount of people in the audience that answered and from their reposes could gain insight into the three individually areas.

These are the responses i got from the artefact i posted.

•"I absolutely would like to hear the referees during the game in highlights , he‘d be the guy with a red face because everybody else at home likes or doesn’t the call”

•“A great game of rugby league was ruined by an official nervous of trusting his own judgment because of video intervention. At one point, four decisions were passed upstairs in six minutes, and, most worryingly, not all of them appeared to come back with a satisfactory conclusion. “

•“ Success will bring more demands to open the door to greater use of artificial intelligence in a sport that is made beautiful by its organic, human-error dictated nature.”

•“It is not a giant leap from goal-line checking or hearing the referee to coaches being able to challenge decisions as they can in American football.”

•“It would slow the game down. Before we know it, we could have the referee running off to the replay booth to examine everything from dive/penalty debates, elbow-related challenges and is-he-isn't-he out of the technical area disputes every few minutes.”

•“If you could hear the ref you could cut down on abuse towards refs and swearing as if the case in rugby and American football.”

•One person posted that in other sports hearing the referee is a good thing because fewer infractions are likely to be committed thus saving time. This could happen for football.

Artefact 1 -Evaluation

In review of my first artefact I have determined the target audience for my research which is 18-65. This has been reaffirmed by getting results from each age group I put down in the questionnaire. The verdict I gained from this is I will continue to use this as the target audience. I found that people over 65 plus did not engage the questionnaire. This was not due to not asking them to participate but because they felt that they were there to just watch sports. I would not do this type of experiment again as I would what people to answer questions in their own time and leads me to that.

Reviewing the questionnaire lead me to focus on two sports ( soccer & American football) in the next artefact as the other sports I listed were not popular with what I set to find out. This was due to the responses I gathered. Focusing on the two sports will allow me to focus my next artefact into what I intend to gather in the next experiment.

Another area of interest I have found out is not everyone will find what I intent to do is not popular. This is due to question seven.

Question seven asked “Would you be interested in hearing what was said in clip 2? If yes, explain why”. Not everyone unanimously said yes to this question. Only 40% of people said yes. This shows me that 60% of my audience are traditionalist and wouldn’t like to hear what was said in clip two.

The reasons that they gave were varied on this one but all the responses were interesting. One response was “I wouldn’t like to hear what he was saying because their wouldn’t be anything to talk about after the game” This may be an area I can investigate to follow on. This leads me to conclude that for the 40% who said yes where could they access this?

With the responses from question 4 and 5 I have also determined that another area of interest to investigate will be; where I can put highlighted packages with the changes made to them in regards to sound.

Out of 11 people out of 20 that said they did have digital TV but only 7 of them had it for the purposes of watching sports broadcast. The has made me review where I intend the viewers to see modified highlighted packages. I intent to further investigate this.

Artefact 1 - Summary

Broadcasting sports & Sound - Artefact 1

From the questionnaire ‘Broadcasting sports & Sound’ I will collate the responses I got, to give me a better understanding of the audience I have posed questions to. I will collate the answers into charts and graphs so that it demonstrates clearly what the audience like or dislike.

First the audience that this data is collected from is from a sports bar in Leicester called ‘Junction 8’. It has many people who watch soccer regularly and the sports bar is a well known bar to go and watch football. In recent years they have started to show American football games during the evenings and have become popular with the local. This makes the sample of people I asked know the basics of both sports.

The sample size was 20 people from Junction 8 sports bar.

Collation of answers

Out of the 20 people that I sampled 12 were female and 8 were male.

This was surprising to be to find because I taught that there would be more males than females in a sports bar.

Question two that was asked was the age range people belonged too. They were:

The third question was about some of their favourite sports.

The most poular results were: football, rugby,tennis, snooker, american football.

This was because it gives me information about how many of those sports use different technologies and those who don’t. This will allow me to focus on those who don’t use technologies like used in the others. Many people choose more than one sport.

From the list listed i can see one out of the five that doesn’t use direct technology for the viewer to listen or to know what the referee says. I will focus on this sport as a base. To compare with another sport that uses the technology.

Question 4 & 5

Out of 11 people that said they did only 7 of them had it for the purposes of watching sports broadcast.

This was the end other the general questions I asked the sample of people. The sample was then shown two clips that correspond to the questions which show in one an American football referee explain what happened in the clip. In another you see a soccer referee talking to a player about a tackle. These are the reposes I got after the people I sampled watched the two 10 second clips.
Responses from audience.

Questions six asked list the differences between the clips.

The number one answers were the referees. “One was talking was the other wasn’t” was a common thing written down. 80% of the people said this or similar.

Question seven followed on with this an asked “Would you be interested in hearing what was said in clip 2? If yes, explain why”.

Not everyone unanimously said yes to this question. Only 40% of people said yes.

The reasons were varied on this one but all the responses were interesting. One response was “I wouldn’t like to hear what he was saying because their wouldn’t be anything to talk about after the game”

This shows that not all people would like to hear the referee and maybe investigating why this is could be another potential way to move my research forward.

n the next question many people said they would like to hear their favourite athlete in live sports broadcasted games but in the final question many people said they would like to see them on highlighted packaged with 60% saying this. This was the most popular vote. This may be something to look at in the next phases of this project.

Broadcasting live sporting events has been consistently changing over time with the advancements of technology. I am researching into how has live sports matches accommodate this and manipulated sound for a better viewing experience? And as part of that project I have provided two 10 second clips for you to watch.

Sports broadcasting in England is widely believed to have started in January 1927. It was a Rugby Union match where England met Wales. Listeners to the broadcast used numbered grids published in the Radio Times so they could understand the area of the pitch the action was taking place. One of the commentator read out grid references during the match. The first live broadcast of a sporting event was a football match between Arsenal vs Arsenal Reserves on 16 September 1937.

The sound used in the broadcast was not the best quality, but for its era was ground breaking. The main problems were the recording systems, the quality and characteristics of the microphone, sound amplification, synchronization of the camera and sound playback were limited. The microphone had to be directional so that the audio was not drowned out by the ambient noise.
But they were not used until 1930 when it was developed by Harry Olsen. The film and sound was projected in a theatre, it meant that the amplification system had to be loud enough to be heard clearly by all the audience but remain undistorted.
This caused more people being interested in sound and brought a lot of “technological advancements between 1929 and 1950”. One of them being directional mics.

Directional mics have a cardioid pattern that picks up sound in a "heart-shaped" pattern, gathering more sound from one direction than another. There are many variations of the cardioid pattern like the hyper cardioid. This is an exaggerated version of the cardioid pattern. It is very directional and eliminates most sound from the sides and rear. Due to the long thin design of hyper cardioids, they are often referred to as shotgun microphones. The sound from these types of mics can sometimes be a little unnatural. It helps to add constant background noise at a low level. This is why we hear crowd noise in the background and has become a convention of any live sporting event.

With the use of directional microphones becoming the norm; in modern broadcasts of sports. They are being used for the benefit of the viewers. As television technology moved forward through time, sports broadcasting was wide ranging with a variety of sports being broadcast. Not all an enjoyable experience for the audience, where the audience took what they were given; in terms of quality and preference.
This was the analogue age. The invention of digital TV saw a turn in emphasis for the audience with channels catering for specific audiences becoming paramount with the emergence of broadcasters like sky sports and Euro sport. These new channels allowed other sports who would have not otherwise gain much more audience exposure. A classic example is speed way motor racing. To supplement this, the audience could choose to buy ‘new’ technologies like sound systems, where it “gives a sense of surround sound which in turn enhances the viewing experience. The new experience gave a sense that the viewer was at the sporting event”.

The next breakthrough in technology that really changed the experience for the audience is with the introduction of interactive television which puts the viewers in the driving seat and has made them feel part of the action. The authors states that TV interactivity extended choice into a new dimension and offered time-based data/information/transactional services.”
Rather than numbers of programs you get new functionality, for example different camera angles for a sports event. It gives the viewers the choice to save and watch games for later viewing, buddy lists, electronic program guides, instant messaging, interactive chat, interactive games, internet access, in addition video-on-demand. The emergence of these technologies allowed sports broadcasting to broaden its appeal, in addition making the viewer part of the sporting event.

The UK currently leads the world in interactive TV capability. The author states that
“In November 2000 5.64 million homes, had access to digital TV mostly led by satellite provider British Sky Broadcasting.

According to British Sky Broadcasting, which pioneered interactive sports content with Sky Sports Interactive, the author states that “36% of viewers now use its interactive sports service.” Designing content for interactive TV shows me that there is a potential for improvement in the sound for highlights packages. Which are frequently accessed through interactive TV.

The future for sports broadcasting is 3D. It has revolutioised the way we watch TV in the future and is being implemented by BSKYB. Football fans were able to watch the world's first live 3D TV sports broadcast when Arsenal met Manchester United. This shows that sports plays a huge part in implementing new technologies. BSkyB successfully broadcast the UK’s first live event in 3D TV to a domestic 3D television set in April 2009.

This has lead me to investigate my research question.

Research Question

Broadcasting live sporting events has been consistently changing over time with the advancements of technology. How has live sport matches accommodate this and manipulated sound for a better viewing experience?

I intend to research all the above mention elements using experiments. The aim of this is to

Find and learn who the target audience is?
Would they prefer another option rather than the conventions?
Why some sports allow you hear more on the field action than others?
If hearing on field action can be implemented into sports that don’t use this as a convention?
with new technology like 3d becoming the popular can 3d sound work in a 2d environment?
With the emergence of 3d TVs becoming more popular, is their the potential of the 3d sound and video be made into highlighted packages for use with interactive TV?

I will try and find the answers to these question in the next phase of my research where i will make experiments to prove or disprove the above questions?

One orgionasation that has court my eye is De Montfort Hall in Leicester. De Montfort Hall is a major concert hall located in Leicester City Centre. It puts on concerts for major acts ,live performances and plays. The idea that has intrested me is doing a promotional piece for them whice could include an advert for tv, promotional documentry for them or content for thoer website. I have come to this conclusion becuase they are a major venue in the east midlands but doesnt have a wide rage publicity if any. Looking at their website it doesnt have any videos of their venue or what they offer potencial clients. Futhermore its promotion through video is non existent. This is why i feel their is potencial for me here to do something.

Another orginisation that has caught my eye is a charity called Voluntary Action LeicesterShire. They are a voluntary organisation that acts to involve volunteers and local groups in improving life in Leicester and Leicestershire.VAL was first established in 1965 as the Council for Voluntary Service for Leicester and has developed into a major force for change and improvement in the City.

The project that intrests me about this orginsation is The 'ACE Project' .This project gives young people a voice, and enables them to be active in the design and planning of environmentally friendly activities for young people aged 10-13. They also have a project steering group of 11-13 years olds who actively contribute to project design, delivery and decision-making.

There is an opertunity for this orgination for them promote the good work their doing aswell as a documenting their work for other people to watch the good work their doing.

2. Purpose, audience, length of video

Deborah advises that clips for website be about 1.5 minutes each and that the whole video should be several minutes long.

This will mean very clear focus when preparing and filming. There will be a lot of unused material which could be edited and archived. It is suggested that students could be paid at a rate of £8 - £10 per hour to do this, as they will have already given a great deal of their time and skill to the project.

Short clips will be provided for the website and the whole piece will be used with different audiences, including people at National Assembly (provided organising committee happy) and YMCAs and individuals considering self and peer assessment.

Simon Badman (YMCA England Head of Communications) will be asked about any additional stock shots he would like to have and will be kept informed about progress.

3. Approach to filming participants

Deborah advises that we think carefully about how people come across when different techniques are used.

Talking straight to camera can be too authoritative and formal.
Need to get people relaxed and smiling and easier for them to be expressive about their experience when they are looking slightly aside and talking to somebody.
Need to structure interviews/ questions/ conversations beforehand and Jill to take a lead on interviews to give the crew time to do all the technical stuff. Interviewer can be edited out.

It may be that old photos could be used to show ‘before’ and ‘after ‘.

Whole tone of video to be upbeat and inspiring. We will need to work consciously with this!

4. Risk Assessments

These are needed for each location that the students will visit and there are forms, which Abdul will circulate

The main points to be covered:

Students to be informed of fire drill and any other relevant procedures at each venue
Each venue to evidence safe use of electricity in designated filming space
Safe lockable room to be provided at each venue for university’s equipment (which is being provided without charge)
Each venue to ensure that permissions are agreed by all present and that team be made aware of people who do not consent to appear. Badge could be provided.

It would help the team if photographs could be provided of rooms to be used at each venue

5. Celebrating the partnership

Deborah and Jill both keen to celebrate the partnership between Nottingham Trent University and YMCA.

We have been approced through Deb and the university to take part in a project for the YMCA England Insync Standerds Department . Our main point of contact will be Jill Robinson. After emailing her to set up a meeting we have got an idea of the direction we have both agreed the project will go .

BackGround

YMCA is a national and international Christian youth movement that supports children and young people through, amongst other things, the provision of accommodation to homeless young people, youth work, vocational training and programmes promoting good health and family relationships.

Insync Standards are a development tool for YMCAs wanting to deliver the best possible services to people. Although reflective of the key features of other quality frameworks, they are customised around the work of YMCAs, as requested by the YMCA Movement, and are endorsed by the Charity Commission.

Purpose of the Project

Is to give a video perspectives on working with the Standards which will help them bring this to life .

In addition to being able to feature clips on the website – for example, a Peer Assessor talking about the training and development programme, an Insync co-ordinator talking about the challenges faced by an association, a CEO describing the process and value of working with the Standards, we would also like all perspectives edited into a whole video piece that can be used to: promote the Standards to people considering signing up for self and peer assessment
demonstrate the value of Insync to partner organisations and funding bodies

It is hoped that elements of the whole piece could be used at the Movement’s National Assembly which takes place this year on the 9th – 11th April in Nottingham to further promote the Standards to participants and act as a backdrop to the celebration of the successful accreditation of more YMCAs.

TREATMENT

A solitary figure, BOGDAN, is waiting at a bus stop. He is sat alone and silent. He checks the time.

Bogdan storms from a building, followed by his LAWYER. He is smoking; rapidly inhaling and exhaling. His lawyer explains the need to remain calm so they can continue a meeting in which they are negotiating his family’s emigration. Bogdan is absorbed in his concern for his family; she walks away, returning to the meeting.

At home, Bogdan fills in an application. His son’s name and a school emblem can be seen atop the form. He proceeds to write an email to his son explaining what the near future may hold for him.
Bogdan pauses only once - to delete and reword a sentence.

The door of the Lawyer’s office opens and Bogdan enters. She shows him the airline reservation for his wife and son. His breathing becomes temporarily more relaxed as he sits. Bogdan expresses concern about the cultural implications for his family if and when they arrive in England. Particularly, the language barrier they will face. His speech lapses only once, and at this time the Lawyer enquires further about his personal concerns - the first truly personal question we have seen her ask of him.

Bogdan returns home to find a letter with a familiar school emblem on the envelope. Bogdan sits down in his living room to read it. Shortly, he stands quickly, screws the letter up and hurls it across the room. Some moments later he sits down, more slowly.

Bogdan is sat at a bus stop. He removes a crumpled letter from his pocket, unfolds it and studies it for a few seconds, before depositing it in a nearby trash can and sitting down once more.
Shortly a bus appears; Bogdan stands and raises his arm.

Justifications of designs and processes:

CAMERA WORK:

Visual ideas of some of the scenes would be to do with isolation and loneliness, so using a surface divider (in the scenes where he is at his desk with images of his family) it would emphasise the distance between him and his family. Close up shots are also going to be used to focus on the emotion on the main characters face. Other main visual aspects is the journey of his emotions from anger to calm to worry, to do this different camera work can be applied such as making sure the characters are within the same quadrant of the screen, so that the viewer's attention doesn't jump from one object to another and focuses on the emotion of the character etc.

SOUND TREATMENT:

Ambient sound is going to be recorded to give an aspect of realism of the sets. Sound will have to reflect the scenes e.g. emotive, sensitive, audience should feels sympathetic. Intimate sound will be used for emphasising the change of scenes and moment; or even change of emotion between characters. ‘‘Hyper-real’’ sound will be used which is just exaggeration of reality (typing, footsteps, also experimenting with reverb for voice-over used for Bogdan is reading what he is typing.

EDITING:

The editing treatment would like to give a sense of realism so the shots that would be used would be making sure that it is focused on the characters, simple cuts will be used so that the viewer is not distracted by anything to fancy like wipes or spinning transitions. The type of editing that is going to be done is called invisible editing where the cuts are intended to be inconspicuous except for special dramatic shots. During post production a piece of software called fraps is intended to be used to record what happens on the desktop so we can get a scene where you can see what Bogdan is writing on his laptop but there are other options because there is a setting on the z1 camera that allows you to shoot computer screens but both will be done to see which looks better in the final edit.

LIGHT TREATMENT:

Lights will be required for the office scene as well as the house scene. These will a traditional three point lighting setup.

Lighting: Ryan Carthy – in charge of controlling natural light and adding any light to produce shadow and make sure that the scene is lit to the directors needs.

Sound manager: Umar Hussain – to make sure that all the sound effects, ambient sound and sound tracks are available for the editor to input to the final edit,

Camera: Diana Sabau – To have total control of the camera, make sure that the shots are in focus and that she can capture what the director has asked for from all different angles.

Location manager: Alan Vickerstaff – To look at the script and find the location that is most suitable and matches the description of the location as it is read in the script.

Photographer: Alan Vickerstaff – To record what is happening outside of filming and during filming by taking images of what happens during pre production, production and post production.

Production assistant: Umar Hussain – To assist the producer in case there are too many jobs for the producer in which case the production assistant would step in and help out.

Health and safety representative: Alan Vickerstaff – To go to all the locations chosen by the location manager and make sure that risk assessments are carried out and make sure that the sets are safe enough to film on.

For our first major project of the year we have been asked to produce and present a proposal for a 6 minute fictional film based on the script you have been given. The script we were given was Bogdan.

Bogdan is a man living in England, displaced for unknown reasons from his home country Romania. We journey with him as he struggles to be reunited with his wife and son, but also as he tries to prepare himself, and them, for the future that awaits them once they arrive.

Although the original story is based on the script of a third party, the story we are setting out to tell is the product of the opinions and ideas of the whole production team. A consensus emerged during early meetings that there were certain interpretations of a story revolving around immigration that were overused and/or difficult to say anything new about; for instance, racism, or poverty.

We wanted to focus on the cultural disconnection a person feels when they are displaced. ‘Bogdan’ avoids discussion of the reasons for immigration or its economic implications. It is about the struggle an individual faces irrespective of these issues.

We want our audience to walk away empathising with Bogdan as a person comparable to themselves, not as a stereotype they will dismiss. His love of his family and struggle to protect those he cares about, and the use of language as an emotive tool laying bare the deep fears that come with change, and not fitting in, are themes that transcend the politically charged implications of other films we have seen on the subject.

On monday we booked the studio so we could gain experiance with the equipemnt and being comtable with our roles for the malac project. We first set up a three point lighting set and played around trying to elimate shadows.

This took along time as we had a limited knowlege of doing three point lighting but using examples we found we mangned to gain insight into this technique. This would be useful to us on filming days as it will take less time to set up this technique on location if we never used this practice day.

We also experimented with the camera so we had a better knowlege of it and what all the buttons and settings do. We also tried to do different camera techniques that we had learnt during the seminars like deep space and and depths of fields.

All in all i felt that the practice session was a good learning experiance for our group . It also helped us in getting to know how people in the group worked and i felt it helped us bond and become a stroger group.

RADIO Thanks caller, great question. The fact is that a great deal of a relationship is based on power, and who is holding it in a given situation. Between consenting adults, sexual power games are a great way to explore this in a fun, safe environment with your partner.

Int.Morn.Kitchen

HE and SHE are going about their morning business; making coffee, getting ready for work.

HE So you’ll be able to get away early today?

On friday our group meet again to discuss our projects and the work we had so done.

Friday 23rd October 2009:

• A new member has joined the group, who will take up the role of sound recording
• We have got interested actors and actresses who have e-mailed back to take part in our film
• We have sent details and asked the actors to call back
• Completed a schedule for the filming and practice for all roles
• Tuesday at 2pm after lecture we will do a set rehearsal
• Wednesday at 9am we will do a dress rehearsal
• Monday at 9am, lighting and camera practice will be done before filming on Wednesday, by people undertaking these roles
• Script will be finalised on Monday (all changes)
• The risk assessment has been scheduled to be done on Monday as well
• We have had another discussion regarding our location, after having a sound lecture. We then decided a bedroom, but have now gone back to our original idea of the cellar due to sound and lighting purposes
• For all filming we have got permission from the technician to borrow equipment (e.g. camera, lights, mic etc) on specific days, when needed, whether for practice of actual filming.

What is a location manager?

A location manager is someone that works closely with a production company or advertising agency, and sometimes the director of a film, in order to find a suitable location for a scene in a film or TV show. They will also be part of the decision making when it comes to seeing if the location is pracitcal, in a reasonable distance and effective. The location manager negotiates with the location owner, neighbours and residents, once they have found the suitable location. They would need to also make sure the location has sufficient permits in order to film there, prepare temporary facilites for the crew and production and also arrange parking for trucks and storage.

How to become a location manager?

• good knowledge of their own city or region
• a working knowledge of local governmental procedures
• a passable knowledge of architectural styles and periods

The first week back has been intresting and getting back in the groove has been ok. The coursework has excited me and im most looking forward to getting stuck into the production side of the work as i feel more engaged with that side of things. I feel that im leaning more towards the production side as im exploring this as a field i might go into in the future.

Looking at the 1st SPP essay, i believe that this will help me become focused in specifically what type of field and things i would like to focus on. So i will be looking forward to exploring this more when i do the essay. We had a lecture and seminar on this during this week to get us thinking along those lines.

All in all the its been a good week and look forward to carrying on and becoming a better practioner.

I spent four weeks in Second Life , attempting to understand my identity in the virtual world. I found that second life was hugely entertaining, parts of it were scary, but as you'll discover from my diary below there was never a dull moment.

The best thing I taught about Second life was its main strength which is its user generated content . The content is at a high level at times and most of it is created by residents, but like in the real world most of it is junk on walls. Personally I didn’t really care for it.

I also found that without members second life would not exist because most of its content has been built by its member allowing them to build objects, industries and communities that would have never been there otherwise.

I discovered that everything in second life was one click away which made me interact more with it. This was because it had more than enough content that I found interesting and related specifically to me. This links back to people helping the program because without people added their own person touch not everyone could have been catered for.

In conclusion, my feelings on Second Life is I found it to be a form of escapism. I enjoyed exploring and talking to people from different countries and aloud me to literally live a ‘Second Life’ in the online world where I could do the things that I can’t do in the real world like flying.

It seems that every week I see something new and interesting in Second Life. Someone’s must have spent a lot of time of their avatar to make it look like this. I saw this character in the ‘Orgy’ island.

While I was in the island I taught I might as well give dancing ago but at least this time I wasn’t controlling the dancing but from the picture I don’t think it was a good idea. It wasn’t pretty.

I meet a new friend this week. I was just walking and he was new to second life and kept asking me questions. I felt bad because I didn’t know most of the answers. I’ve added him to my friend list so hopefully will talk some more soon.

This week I fancied a change. I was walking around and I wasn’t really happy with the way my avatar was looking, so I decided to change it. I gave my avatar more muscles. Also I changed his hair.

I was making a lot of friends this week because I took an intrest in everyone I meet this week . But their one in particluar person that intrested me . She was sitting on the sofa and every time I talked to her she sayed ‘Tell me a joke’ I dunno if it was the computer playin tricks but talk about beung weird.

My favorite island this week was with people walking down the run way like models which I taught id give a ago but I was getting out classed by the girls.

This week was exciting because I enjoyed flying around like superman. Its faster than walking around exploring things, if I see anything interesting I can land. But I have to say my flying skills are not up to date because I found the controls very unresponsive and kept bumping into objects. Also I can never land on your feet, my avatar kind of just falls out of the sky and falls face first. If you want to call that a landing.

While I was exploring a new island this week I came over something really interesting. All I saw was people queuing and bowing to this avatar sitting on the orange chair. I didn’t really know what was going on because I was in the Italian island and couldn’t really understand what everyone was saying.

This week was action packed in second life for me. I saw some cool and some weird things. I was walking around where I saw a collection of exotic cars that u probably never see in the real world. I saw Ferraris and other supercars parked next to a monster truck.

I also saw some wired things this week. I was exploring some islands when I came across this person that was completely naked. At first I taught my computer was rendering the program fast enough then a couple of other people were naked as well. All in all I would saw it was an exciting week in Second life.

This documentary is about Sigmund Freud and his American nephew, Edward Bernays and how Bernays invented public relation in the 1920s. He took his uncles ideas and used them to manipulate people. He showed big companies how to make people want things that they didn’t even need. In this case women smoking. He did this by linking products to peoples unconscious desires.

He made women think that smoking was a symbol of their independence and freedom. He made women think that if they smoked in public they had the freedom to do it. If women smoked it perceived them to be more powerful and independent.

Edward Bernays did this by using new techniques at the time like celebrity endorsement and outrageous PR stunts.

After making my avatar and going through the introduction to using second life I didn’t really know what to do because it was the first. So I was playing around with all the button where I found the Teleport button which can take you to different environments and islands. I managed to teleport to dance island where I walked around for while exploring. I started to talk to someone from Greece but she really wasn’t the talking type.

I then went into one of the dance club where like you do at a club I started to dance but not very good. I also struck up a conversation with the people around me. I’m not to sure but I think the better you dance the more money you get but I’m not sure because the everyone one had $ signs above their heads.

Most of the time this week I’ve been teleporting from island to island to see what second life has to offer. I feel that the more I interacted with the environment and people the more rewarding the experience I had. I also found that you meet a wide range of people from different backgrounds.

The best island I found during this week was the lost island armory because I was greeted with a drone that followed you and I had a lot of fun running away from it.

In the lecture we learnt about being an interstitial node. We were given an introduction to modernism vs post modernism and what it mean for a person. My analysis of the lecture is, for example consider a person as the ‘interstitial node’ than that person is connected to many other points like blogs, second life, facebook, youtube and social networking sites over the internet than ideas and thoughts can be learnt and shared with one another.

At first I was a bit confused but understanding what modernism and post modernism are clears a lot up. Modernism is when some one creates something e.g. a book than that person will take credit for making it. Post Modernism is different because in post modernism the inventor or creator of the e.g. book will be celebrated after even his dead by people feeding off his ideas and harvest and revise them to create something new. This means that information from different backgrounds and points of view can be merged into our own beliefs and can be shared with others.

Sharing ideas and leaning from one another is important because if someone can take and idea and at the own idea to it to make something new than that can only be beneficial to everyone because a new concept has emerged. I think having rhizome theory is important because there’s always going to be more people being attached to the rhizome theory about a subject.

Technology these days seems to growing faster and faster with new concepts being thought of each an everyday. One new technology is "Moveable Projected Displays using Projector Based Tracking". These a really big mouth full. For those who don’t know what that mean , all will become clear when you watch this video:

This type of technology is really interesting because it can have multiple applications in the real world. One application that I think can be enhanced by this technology could be implementing it into car windshields. As the driver is looking at the road through the windshield information could be displayed to the driver like MPH and other useful information instead of the driver looking down at the dash board to read the information.

I think this picture screams colour and light because the bright lights from the Ferris wheel is enhanced by the black sky which makes the colour and light coming from the wheel brighter. The light draws the eye towards the wheel which is a major focal point of the picture. I took this picture in Nottingham City Centre.

I have started this project out with setting my up my Second Life account and character. The black and white effect worked well in the video because it makes it look like film noir. The black and white effect works well with the three point lighting we set up for the video. Without the black and white effect the video wouldn’t look as good because from our research we conducted we found that film noir uses harsh lighting and shadows a lot and we have tried this in our video and without the effect the lighting wouldn’t suite the video.

The music that is used also works well with the film because it sets the mood of the narrative and people can get a sense of what the film will be about because we have used dramatic intense music. The music also sets the tone of the film.

Another thing i tought worked well in the film was the use of props and costume becuase it made the film look and feel more realistic and makes it more believable to the audience.

The speech in the film didn’t work well in the film. It could have been more fluent. Its seems like I am wondering about what to say by stopping and starting. To improve this I think the script should have been rehearsed more.

Another thing that didn’t work well in the film was you can sometimes see the backlight when I moves to take a drink, this can be avoided by either setting the camera somewhere else, moving the back light to a different location or by moving the props.

The film could be improved with more fluid speech. This will help with the pace and flow of the film which is important as it can help keep the audiences attention. I would change the location of the film to a bar or restaurant so they was more going on in the frame than just the character. The focus would be taken off the character and would allow interaction with the environment e.g. with people around him.
